This year’s award for ANIO Clinical Excellence goes to Dr Rulan Parekh

Dr. Rulan S. Parekh is Associate Chief of Clinical Research, Senior Scientist at the Hospital for Sick Children and University Health Network and Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine in the Departments of Pediatrics, Medicine, Epidemiology and Health Policy and Management Evaluation at the University of Toronto. She also has served as Program Director for both Pediatric Nephrology and Adult Nephrology programs, and Interim Director of the Transplant and Regenerative Medicine Center.

She is a leading scientist in nephrology who has made significant contributions to our understanding of cardiovascular disease in children and adults with kidney disease, and the genetic risk of chronic kidney disease among African Americans. She leads a number of observational studies in kidney disease in Canada, US and Africa addressing risk factors leading to chronic kidney disease.   She has published over 120 peer-reviewed publications in high profile journals such as Nature Genetics, New England Journal of Medicine, and is associate or section editor of several leading nephrology and pediatric journals. She is currently funded by the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) and NIH, and also serves on several grant panels at CIHR, NIH, and various foundations.

Rulan has a long track record in research mentoring with over 40 Master’s, Doctoral, and Postdoctoral trainees in clinical research with many having successful research careers as well as over 50 clinical fellows she mentored as program director. Dr. Parekh has received numerous awards including the American Society of Nephrology-Carl W. Gottschalk Research Scholar, the Advising, Teaching and Mentoring Award Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University and the National Kidney Foundation of Maryland Award for outstanding scientific achievement.  She has also been elected into the American Society of Clinical Investigation, the Society for Pediatric Research and the American Pediatric Society. 

This year’s ANIO Award for Academic Excellence goes to Dr. Prabir Roy-Chaudhury.

Prabir Roy-Chaudhury MD, PhD, FRCP (Edin) is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Arizona Health Sciences. He is also the Director of the Division of Nephrology and the Director of the Arizona Kidney and Vascular Center. After graduating from the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, India, he trained in Internal Medicine and Nephrology at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland and at the Beth Israel Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA. In addition to being an active transplant nephrologist, Dr. Roy-Chaudhury’s main research interest is in uremic vascular biology (including both dialysis vascular access dysfunction and cardiovascular disease in kidney disease patients) and he currently directs the Arizona Kidney and Vascular Center which is a comprehensive, integrated, multi-disciplinary translational research program that includes basic science, clinical science and patient care components. This translational research program is funded through the National Institutes of Health, the Veterans Administration research program and through industry grants. Dr. Roy-Chaudhury has received national and international awards, has published over 150 peer reviewed manuscripts and is a sought after invited speaker, both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Roy-Chaudhury is also the American Society of Nephrology co-chair of the Kidney Health Initiative which is a public-private partnership between the ASN and the FDA which aims to bring together nephrologists, industry partners, patient advocacy groups and regulatory agencies; in an attempt to facilitate the passage of drugs, devices and biologics into the kidney disease space.

Sundaram Hariharan is a Professor of Medicine and Surgery at the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute, University of Pittsburgh and Medical Director of Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He is the  medical director of the kidney and pancreas transplant program at the  University of Pittsburgh. His research interest is in the fields of kidney and pancreas transplantation. He has published over 140 peer-reviewed articles in these areas and has participated in 30 different clinical trials and in 15 as PI. His scientific contributions cover variety of important renal transplant topics. They are: Recurrent and De novo Diseases after renal transplantation, Long-term Kidney Transplant Survival, Surrogate Markers for Renal Transplant Outcome and BKV infection after Renal Transplantation. Recently he has been focusing on identification, pathogenesis and treatment of sub-clinical acute rejection in renal transplant recipients with a goal of treating sub-clinical rejection and improving long-term allograft survival.

Prasad Devarajan, MD is the Williams Endowed Chair, Professor of Pediatrics and Developmental Biology, Director of Nephrology and Hypertension, Director of Clinical Laboratories, Director of the Nephrology Fellowship Training Program, Director of the Office of Pediatric Clinical Fellowships, Medical Director of the Kidney Stone Center, and CEO of the Dialysis Unit at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and University of Cincinnati. He has authored over 230 peer-reviewed publications and 35 chapters. His research has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health for more than 26 years. He has established an NIH-funded Center of Excellence in Nephrology, as well as an NIH-funded Fellowship Training Program in Nephrology. His major research interests lie in using proteomic and functional genomic approaches for the discovery of pathogenetic pathways, diagnostic biomarkers, and novel therapies of acute kidney injury. He holds more than 120 US and international patent applications. He has been named twice by Thomson-Reuters as one of the “World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds”. His laboratory has pioneered the discovery, translation, and validation of NGAL as a biomarker of kidney injury. He has mentored over 30 trainees in basic, translational and clinical nephrology. His leadership in clinical and research excellence has garnered his division the #2 rating in Pediatric Nephrology by US News for the third consecutive year.
