ANIO Arti Gupta Excellence in Community Service Award 2025

This year, the special Arti Gupta Service Excellence Award for ANIO 2025 goes to Dr. Sanjay Pandya. Dr. Sanjay Pandya, MD, DNB has made it his life’s mission to combine clinical excellence with a deep commitment to public service, making high-quality medical knowledge freely accessible to both patients and professionals across the globe.

Born and trained in Gujarat, India, Dr. Pandya earned his medical degree from M. P. Shah Medical College, Jamnagar, where his passion for community service began early—he founded the Blood Donors Association and helped establish a Drug Bank that continues to supply medications to underprivileged patients. He was the first qualified private nephrologist in western Gujarat, establishing practice in Rajkot at a time when dialysis services were unavailable within a 250-kilometer radius. Rejecting offers from larger cities, he chose to bring modern renal care to his home region, providing decades of service and leading humanitarian efforts such as free dialysis for victims of the 2001 Kutch earthquake.

Recognizing the critical lack of kidney-health information in regional languages, Dr. Pandya began writing weekly Gujarati newspaper columns in 1992, later compiling them into his landmark 200-page book Tamari Kidney Bachao (Save Your Kidneys). This effort evolved into the Kidney Education Foundation, which now operates the world’s largest multilingual kidney-education platform, available in 40 languages. More than 100 nephrologists worldwide, including global leaders such as Giuseppe Remuzzi and Guillermo García-García, have volunteered to translate and expand this initiative. Since its launch in 2010, www.KidneyEducation.com has reached over 100 million visitors and 800,000 downloads, earning a World Record Award (2017) and recognition from the ISN, ASN, and ERA. Dr. Pandya has personally funded and maintained the project, ensuring its freedom from sponsorship and commercial influence.

In parallel, Dr. Pandya has made foundational contributions to clinical education through his work on fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base management. His 2002 book Practical Guidelines on Fluid Therapy—India’s first comprehensive, practice-based text on the subject—filled a critical gap in medical training. Affordably priced to maximize reach, the book has sold more than 100,000 copies and remains a staple for students and clinicians. The third edition, released in 2024 after seven years of dedicated work, is a 770-page evidence-based monograph covering fluid therapy in diverse medical, surgical, pediatric, and obstetric contexts.

Dr Pandya is recognized with the ANIO Aarti Gupta Excellence in Community Service Award as an exemplar physician and community member, who has successfully and selflessly served the local, national, and international community.
