2026 ANIO Award for Clinical Excellence — Dr. Amit Govil
The American Nephrologists of Indian Origin (ANIO) is pleased to recognize Dr. Amit Govil with the 2026 ANIO Award for Clinical Excellence for his sustained contributions to kidney transplantation, expanding access to care, and leadership in nephrology.
Dr. Govil is the Robert G. Luke Endowed Chair in Nephrology, Director of the Division of Nephrology, Clinical Professor of Medicine, and Medical Director of the Kidney Transplant Program at the University of Cincinnati. A graduate of Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi, he completed his internal medicine residency at SUNY Downstate, nephrology fellowship at the University of Cincinnati, and transplant nephrology fellowship at Oregon Health & Science University.
A defining focus of Dr. Govil’s career has been breaking down barriers to kidney transplantation. Under his leadership, the University of Cincinnati kidney transplant program quadrupled its transplant volume and became one of the higher-volume programs in the United States. Central to this growth was the development of an extensive network of transplant outreach clinics across Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. Through years of personally traveling to these communities, Dr. Govil has helped bring transplant evaluation and follow-up closer to patients while building strong partnerships with referring nephrologists.
Dr. Govil has also championed innovative approaches to transplant care, including telemedicine, combined liver-kidney transplantation, programs addressing obesity as a barrier to transplantation, and a unique ocular surface transplant immunosuppression program. His transplant telehealth work was recognized by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services as one of the Top Five Kidney Practices nationally and featured at the 2021 CMS Quality Conference. He has also served as principal investigator or co-investigator on numerous clinical trials, expanding patient access to emerging therapies.
Education and mentorship have remained central to his career, including establishing Ohio’s first transplant nephrology fellowship program and serving as Program Director of the University of Cincinnati Nephrology Fellowship.
Beyond Cincinnati, Dr. Govil has served as President of ANIO, Chair of the National Kidney Foundation Board in Cincinnati, Global CME Chair for AAPI, and co-founder of the Society of Transplant Nephrology. During his ANIO leadership, he helped develop the collaboration among ANIO, the American Society of Nephrology, and the Indian Society of Nephrology, expanding educational opportunities and international collaboration, including ASN access for more than 600 nephrology trainees in India.
Throughout his career, Dr. Govil’s clinical leadership has centered on bringing high-quality kidney and transplant care closer to patients and bringing people together to make that care possible. His impact on patients, trainees, colleagues, and the broader kidney community exemplifies the clinical excellence and service recognized by this award.
