ANIO is pleased to announce this year’s academic excellence award to Dr. Hamid Rabb. Dr. Hamid Rabb was born in Bangladesh and grew up in Montreal. He attended medical school at McGill University in Montreal, then completed Internal Medicine training at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, UCLA School of Medicine. He subsequently undertook clinical training in Nephrology and Leukocyte Biology at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University. Hamid is currently Professor of Medicine & Surgery at Johns Hopkins University, where he has been for 17 years after moving from Hennepin County Med Center, Univ of Minnesota. At Johns Hopkins he is the Medical Director of Kidney Transplantation, and also served as Vice-Chairman of the Department of Medicine, Research, for 6 years.
Hamid’s basic science research has been on the immunology of acute kidney injury, as well as distant organ effects of AKI. He has published over 250 original papers, reviews and book chapters, including in NEJM, Lancet, JAMA, J Clin Invest, J Immunol, J Biol Chem, Am J Transplant, Kidney Int, J Am Soc Neph, Am J Physiol, Brenner’s The Kidney, Glassock’s Textbook of Nephrology, and Johnson & Feehally’s Comprehensive Clinical Nephrology. He has been a principal investigator or investigator on 23 NIH grants, and has been a standing member of NIH study section.
He has a long list of trainees successful in academia, practice and industry. His list of honors include being inducted to the American Society of Clinical Investigation, Association of American Physicians, Canadian Citizenship Award, Bangladesh Physicians Award, and Johns Hopkins Levine Mentorship Award. Hamid is currently the Nephrology Associate Editor for Journal of Clinical Investigation. He has conducted volunteer work in Bangladesh and inner city US for over 30 years, as well as active in international care through Johns Hopkins. Hamid is married with children, enjoys swimming, hiking, movies and time with friends and family.
