ANIO Academic Excellence Award 2018

Karumanchi-S Ananth.high resolutionANIO is pleased to announce this year’s academic excellence award to Dr. Ananth Karumanchi. Dr. Ananth Karumanchi is currently the Director of Renovascular Research and Medallion Chair in Vascular Biology in the Department of Medicine at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles. Dr. Karumanchi also has a secondary appointment as Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Boston and Staff Scientist in Renal Division at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC).  Dr. Karumanchi completed his medical degree from Kilpauk Medical College, University of Madras, India (1992). He then completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit (1996) and fellowship in Nephrology at BIDMC, Boston (1999).  Dr. Karumanchi also underwent training in basic research in the area of tumor suppressors and angiogenesis for 4 years at Harvard Medical School, Boston. He initiated his independent research laboratory in  2000 and has focused on discovering pathogenic pathways and bringing therapies to patients in the areas of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and chronic kidney diseases.  Dr. Karumanchi’s research activities are vertically integrated, ranging from molecular and cell biological studies to animal models to first-in-class human clinical trials.  Dr. Karumanchi has published nearly 300 papers (with several publications in NEJM, Circulation, Nature, Nature Medicine, JCI, Hypertension;  H index = 85) and 25 book chapters.  He has received prestigious awards from several societies including recognitions from American Heart Association (AHA) – Established Investigator Award (2008), the International Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy – Chesley Award (2010) – and Outstanding Investigator Award from the American Federation for Medical Research (2010). He was also elected as a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI) in 2007 and Association of American Physicians (AAP) in 2015. Dr. Karumanchi’s research has been funded by the NIH, AHA, Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Gates Foundation.
